This is an interesting "bronzed" sterling silver tray (8 1/4" by 4") by Bailey Banks & Biddle. The Philadelphia BB&B partnership dates from 1878. In 1894 they incorporated adding "Company" or Co. to the name. The mark here does not have "Co." as most BB&B items do so it dates between 1878 and 1894. In large Art Nouveau initials it is engraved ESS. The initials may have been added to an older tray, the Art Nouveau era being about 1890 to 1910. The embossed design includes oak leaves terminating in scrolls and large flowers. What appears to be bronze gilding was added after the ESS engraving. It is deep into the letters but worn to the silver on some high points. The size suggests this was used for calling cards in the vestibule. Weight is over 4 troy ounces.
